I Might Not Come Back
“I thought you loved me!” she screamed, but already I was out the door and across the garden.
The looks the neighbours gave made me realise I hadn’t put my pants back on, but it was okay.
It was a little unlikely that I would come back in a while.

Distance
Seeing her again after all those months, he thought he would feel more. . . Feel something.
All that time they spent together. The things they said.
The things they done.
Now, he watched her pass by and wonder why he cared so much.
Or how he thought she cared at all.

In The Flesh
It was in a café that we eventually met.
All those hastily scribbled notes between strangers and now she was here. In the flesh.
She was sipping coffee as I approached. She looked up, eyes unreadable. I told her who I was. She nodded, gesturing to the chair beside her.

Rules of Engagement
Watch him, but never let him see you.
Gaze, but never get caught.
Look, but never touch.
See, but stay away.
Imagine, if you must, but be careful.
Remember him at night, or in the coldest morning, but don’t say his name.
Love him, but spare him the pain.

Smelling of Lavender
It was warm and soft, and smelt of lavender. That was her smell, and I always remembered it. Smooth, so smooth. Strong, but fragile. I loved her completely, everything about her… her hair, her eyes, her voice… and her skin. Her skin was amazing, smelling of lavender. Soft and unblemished.

Can’t Sleep
Rain pattered on the tiled roof, dripping over the edge, pooling on the floor.
Lightning flashed in the distance.
One second, two, three… crash, about a mile away.
She felt her husband turn over in his sleep beside her, but she couldn’t sleep.
She hadn’t slept since he told her.

Leaving
“You’re leaving..”
He said it more as a statement.
“I’ve gotta go, it’s just not working for us…”
He didn’t look as if he believed me, but no wonder there.
“Where’re you going?”
“I don’t think I should tell you that.”
“I think you should..”
“Away, just away.”
“With him?”

Good News?
I looked at her in wonder.
“You mean…?”
She nodded slowly, watching me closely.
“That’s, that’s… wow!”
She smiled weakly, hoping for the best.
“So you’re okay with it?”
“Okay with it? Baby, I’m speechless! You mean that you and me… together we…?”
She nodded again, still watching me.
“Wow!”
A Moment of Clarity
The entire car shook violently as the back tire tore itself to pieces. The two lanes of traffic between the shoulder and the car seemed to stretch out for miles.
“How silly,” he mused, “to die, rushing to see a girl who doesn’t even love me anymore.”

The Colours of My Mind
I closed my eyes and the colours of my mind began to move. They danced and swirled, whirling and twirling together.
Eventually, they formed that face. That perfect, enchanting face.
Thousands of miles and hundreds of days are between us, but I still can’t get you out of my mind.
