Can’t Sleep
Rain pattered on the tiled roof, dripping over the edge, pooling on the floor.
Lightning flashed in the distance.
One second, two, three… crash, about a mile away.
She felt her husband turn over in his sleep beside her, but she couldn’t sleep.
She hadn’t slept since he told her.

He said it more as a statement.
“I’ve gotta go, it’s just not working for us…”
He didn’t look as if he believed me, but no wonder there.
“Where’re you going?”
“I don’t think I should tell you that.”
“I think you should..”

Saying Goodbye
Talking for hours, we finally concluded the discussion, painful and embarrassing for us both.
Finally I said goodnight, put down the phone.
